Very sad. One can say anything they want about his politics or The Rooney Rule, but the guy genuinely cared for his players. I will never forget when AB interviewed him last summer. To see two guys who had absolutely nothing in common (a young hip black guy and a really old white guy) obviously care so much for each other is a testament to him. That interview is also why I knew we would never trade AB over the Facebook fiasco.

    RIP Dan.

@RyanGMundy: Sometimes during the offseason we'd have to pay $6 for lunch. I questioned it until I saw Mr. Rooney paying his $6 for lunch. #character

When you follow a team for near on 40 years and Dan has helped shaped them into the class act they are, this has genuenly gutted me. Very upset, and lost for words

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Rooney on multiple occasions at both Fan Fest and training camp, he always made me feel like a friend and took time to talk and never felt rushed. A genuine great individual and will be missed dearly. RIP Mr. Rooney

They are already talking about it on NFL.com, the death of Mr Rooney is going to be all the motivation the Steelers need this year and no one will want to get in our way :)

How fitting it would be to win the superbowl this year for Dan :)

The outpouring of love respect and kindness on this thread on NFL.com is staggering. It's very humbling to read this link below.

I would however like to note that while most teams are bending over backwards to send us as the steeler nation their condolances, ( Raiders, Chargers, Ravens, Cheifs, Green Bay, Dallas, Cincinatti, Houston, Colts, Denver and the Pats ) i've yet to see anything other than RIP Dan Rooney from the Cleveland browns...

On the flip side of that is i particularly like the elequant statement from Robert Kraft of the Patriots.

Has anyone heard what he actually died of? I read in MMQB ( a nice tribute to him, BTW) that Goodell went to see him a couple of weeks ago, so he has been very ill for at least that long.

Privacy or not, that stuff is usually leaked quickly.

He hadn't looked spry for several years so it wasn't any sort of surprise tbh. The alarming thing is that there is some real doubt about just exactly how much % ownership of the team that the surviving Rooney's have. I assumed that after 80+ years that there'd be no doubt about that, but apparently that is not the case. There was something on the Depot last week that put the family ownership as low as 30% iirc :(.

I believe that quite a bit of it has to do with estate taxes. The government takes a huge chunk when someone dies and leaves something so valuable to family. It has also doomed a lot of family farms.
