The weight loss was definitely noticeable when it came to his speed and quickness. Definitely a nice surprise.

Well I guess Deshaun Phillips didn't cost us much at all. Don't understand even wanting to acquire him but I think it might point to the desperation they are feeling with the DB crop they have? Maybe the coaches see more in him or it's just another body to bring in. I don't get this one at all. Maybe he's a special teams guy. He's been cut and waived numerous times. Strange trade in my view. But cost nothing so I guess it's worth a shot. They are going to have to address this secondary soon. And it won't be by getting guys like this. I stated before I was uneasy with all the hope being talked about with this defense. I'm still willing to wait to see what happens but I just don't know. Hope this guy contributes

You're looking into this too much. Skins needed another body at center due to injury. Pittsburgh just waived/injured Antonio Crawford, the CB they just signed yesterday so they needed anotber "camp" body at CB. Crowley wasnt going to even make the practice squad, and neither will Phillips. Trades like this happen all the time during the preseason.

"They're going to have to address the secondary soon"... that is an odd comment considering they've spent a lot of high picks on the secondary recently

2015 draft: 2nd round pick on Golson
2016 draft: 1st round pick on Burns, 2nd round pick on Davis
2017 draft: 3rd round pick on Sutton

They have spent a lot of high draft picks lately. However with the performance of this secondary I don't find it an odd statement at all. When Cockerell is your number two corner and has been getting torched that's an issue no? Now I don't know what the secondary is going to look like and I think the one find they have in all those picks is Burns. I think he has huge potential. But I have not seen much of an improvement at all overall. Granted it's the second preseason game but it's instructive that the defensive coordinator last year after those picks the previous year said they couldn't change the D against the Pats because of the DBs getting burned when they did. I'm hoping to see new faces coming forward this year and making an impact. I listened to the counsel from folks here that the D was going to improve. I admit to being impatient this early in the year and it's probably stupid. But I am still uneasy going into the year with this group in the secondary. Maybe with a healthy D line, the addition of Watt there will be more pressure which will make coverage easier. We'll see

Hey, this secondary may very well suck. They may also be great. There is just no way to judge accurately at this point.

Yeah, Cockrell stuck out like a sore thumb with a long completion and a "shoulda been" touchdown but all the usual restrictions apply. No game planning, the usual pass rushers not playing, a mishmash of players back there with him, no Mitchell, trying everyone and their brother in the slot, etc.

And I am not sure where you are getting anything about Burns. He missed the Giants game and played less than a half last week.By all accounts, he has done a very good job against AB in camp. Kozora was at camp and has been raving about his play and expects a big jump.

As far as the D improving, it DID. Minus the playoff game against the Pats, it was one of the best defenses in the league over the last half season. That did not change just because Brady did what Brady does.

You see? The secondary took care of itself. Edelman tore his ACL.

But but but... Bill Belichick would never play his star players in the preseason. He'd never risk them getting injured. He'd certainly never play his kicker in a preseason game. Only that cheerleader UNCLE Tomlin does such things.

Come on T, you know Tomlin instructed Suisham to run down the field and try to make the tackle out of bounds! That's just poor coaching! Lol

Great point. In the kobayashi maru that is Tomlin hating, if a player gets hurt in the preseason it is Tomlin's fault for playing them. If they do not play and are rusty during the first few weeks, that is Tomlin's fault too.

Cowher's players win the games but only Tomlin (well, maybe a little help from Colbert) loses them.

yeah that's what I said. Of all the picks he has, in my opinion, the biggest upside of any of them. I expect he will play well again. It's the others I'm worried about. At this point having Cockerell as your number two corner is not making me feel good about this group at all But like you said we'll see

I am absolutely fine with not seeing our starters out there in preseason much at all. Tomlin can be criticized for some issues in games but this ain't one. They won't be that rusty by not playing in meaningless games. Rest em.

While I'd much rather see Osweiler, that's fine with me. Thankfully, for the sake of Browns fans, Jackson didn't have his head up his ass and made the right choice. Kizer has shown his the best QB on that roster.

I like it. Looks like I'm gonna have to update my roster prediction again haha

@AdamSchefter: 49ers trading TE Vance McDonald and a fifth-round pick to the Steelers for a fourth-round pick, per sources. Steelers upgrade TE.

Like it. Now if they could only do a trade for Kyle Fuller.
